It was going to be a week trapped on a boat.
It all started off as a family vacation. Except this time with extended family. Can’t complain too much I like my family, and I like traveling, but I wasn’t too excited about being “trapped on a boat” with them. Before the cruise I was upset to be leaving my home, and my friends. Even if it was for a week, and to go on a once in a lifetime experience. After a lot of stress from my parents when it came to packing, and the fourteen hour car ride to Texas, I finally made it Huston. I saw some of my family I hadn’t seen in five years, which was an amazing experience, and thought that would be the highlight of my trip. Boy was I wrong. Soon after my family was there, getting ready to be on a cruise ship, boarding on a boat that will take us away from the sweet United States of America, to the three countries of Mexico, Belize, and Honduras, and of course a lot of water. Before we knew it we were on the boat: Carnival Magic.
Sunday: First Day Abroad
Sunday was the day we got on the boat. It was a weird and stressful experience. We left a couple bags at my family’s house, one with my slippers in them. Trust me I love my slippers so that was tragic. So there we were on a boat, my main objective: meet people. I wanted to go with the flow and meet as many people as I could. Issue was I didn’t know how. I never tried socializing with a stranger before, and I didn’t want to walk up to someone way older or way younger than me and try to talk to them. Technically the first two people I met were in a pizza line. My mom and I were waiting for my dad to go get pizza, and I looked over and saw two teenage girls standing near him. They looked cute and I wanted to see if I could actually engage in a conversation with a complete stranger. Well two in that case. So I walked up to my dad, and told my mom I wanted to wait in line with him. My mom not understanding why walked up with me, and asked if I wanted to look at nearby places to eat. She dragged me along, and once the coast was clear I whispered to her “Mom those girls are cute I want to talk to them.” Then me going back in line with my dad. I waited until the end of the line to try and talk to them because I was a coward. Finally I just did my method of 1…2…3… go! I asked them where they were from and they told me from *Censored so you don’t stalk them* Texas. They asked me and I replied with “Roswell New Mexico”. Then my dad handed me pizza, it fell, I awkwardly caught it, and went on my way.
After that it was a solid time of being bored and tagging along with my family. Bugging them every time I could, asking about a rumored teens club. Until finally my dad took me there and got me signed up. Then it was just a matter of a wait until 8:30 for it to open. 8:30 could not have come soon enough. I went to my room, got the paper I had to bring to get into the club, and “freshened up”. I went to the club and saw a couple of people. I could sense the players, the preps, and people I would not like. So I approached a guy and talked to him. His name was Issac (15), and he showed me around the club, boat, and got me a little more familiar with the idea of meeting people on a boat. After him I met this girl named Stephanie (16). I walked over and told her I was going to talk to her, and then we met a boy named Tyson (15). Time passes, and the DJ starts playing music. After all the line dances, people got off the dance floor. Since I had no shame I started dancing to the side. Then a guy named Micheal (15) forced me to go to the middle of the dance floor. He, Tyson, and I then became three goofballs, and started dancing like idiots. To the point where the DJ gave us medals for being the only ones dancing. We danced our hearts out until it was time for us to take a break. We sat down and met a group of people. I don’t want to mention all of their names because they play somewhat of an important role, but I’ll name them later if seemed fit. It was time to play dodge ball, so we all headed to the dodge ball court. There I get to where our side is, and I hear some girls shout “New Mexico!” and being one of the only people from New Mexico on the cruise I turned my head. The two girls from the pizza line were there. I quickly learned their names to be Vanya (15) and Macy (13). I introduced them to my friends and we began talking. Time passed and we decided to ditch dodgeball to talk. As the night went further into the A.M’s everyone but Vanya, Macy, and I went to bed. Us three stayed up until 3am getting to know each other. It was fun, and I was glad to have met them. So I scheduled to meet them the next day at 1pm.
Monday: Day At Sea Meeting My New Squad
So Monday we were at sea the entire day, so that meant an entire day to meet people. Yay! I met Vanya and Macy in our meeting spot, and we were off to roam the ship. That’s when I decided to tan, to later get sunburned really bad. We walked around, ate, tanned, and just had fun. That lasted until it was time for me to go at 5pm. Then I had to go eat. It was the first formal night, and I was celebrating my parents 24th anniversary. So the three of us agreed to meet 10pm in the same spot.
Dinner passed and I went to the club. I met more people and we continued to talk. Finally I saw a guy sitting there, he had long hair so I thought “Cool a guy with long hair. He must be cool!” So I met him, and her turned out to be really cool. His name was Garrett (16). He plays bass, and plays trumpet. I play trumpet too so of course I had to talk to him. We befriended one another, and I introduced him to the group i was currently hanging out with. Little did I know, that I would meet the rest of boat squad that night. Garrett was there to see two friends that told him to meet them at the club. He saw them, and introduced me to them. Their names were Maddy (15), and Mackenzie (Kenzie, 15). We all talked for a little bit until two girls came in. They looked bored so I told Garrett that we needed to go talk to them. Turned out that Maddy and Kenzie knew them. Their names were Serena (17) and Elyse. (17) We brought them into where we were hanging out in the club. Until around 10pm came, and we wanted to go swimming. Everyone was to go change, including this guy named Chris who I don’t remember when exactly we met. Elyse was already lost, she didn’t want to go swim but Serena I convinced to come with us. Swimming is fun and we were on a boat. You got to live it up! So we all met down there at 10pm with Vanya and Macy, and we started hot tubbing. Kenzie and Maddy lost Garrett and Chris, so they were looking for them a lot. Soon a guy came up to us and asked to join us in the hot tub. He wouldn’t tell me his real name but we called him James (26). He was there, a wall flower. He just went around on the cruise and observed people. Back to the meeting people. There was a guy who walked around playing the Ukulele, who we convinced to hang out with us. His name was Kevin (16) and he was super into 16 Pilots. At that point the foundation of Boat Squad was made. Vanya gave me the nickname Triscuit, and it stuck. So Boat Squad was Vanya, Macy, Maddy, Kenzie, Garrett, Chris, Serena, Kevin, and me, Triscuit. After getting kicked out of the hot tub for being in it too late, we sat around and talked. Slowly everyone had to go to bed until it was just Garrett, Chris, and I. We stayed up until 2:30 when Garrett went to bed. Chris and I stayed up another hour. That’s when something amazing happened. I don’t remember what time of the day or if it was on Monday but I’m assuming it is. We were in an elevator with random people, and we were talking about how it is awkward to be in an elevator with strangers. So in a hope to make things more awkward I started singing firework. That song became more then just a joke. You will soon see. Finally we decided we must go to bed. We were on our way until his dad stopped us. Lectured Chris, and we went to our rooms in an awkward tone. Of course we set up a meeting the next night at 10pm.
Tuesday: Cozumel Mexico, And A Tribute To “The Breakfast Club”.
The morning came fast. After staying up until 3am the previous night, and having to wake up sometime before 10am, I was extremely tired. Nonetheless I was still ready for a day in Cozumel, Mexico. Well all of me except the sunburn that is. Going to a hot climate with a sunburn is not fun by the way. We got off the boat and got to the beautiful shore. My excursion that day was to be going in a submarine with my aunt, uncle, brother, and two young cousins. After eating at some Mexican restaurant, (which sucks for me because in New Mexico Mexican restaurants are all over), and a long wait we were underwater. At first it was awesome seeing all of the fish and coral. Then it turned into an hour of looking at the same scenery. I made up my missed sleep in that ride. It was fun don’t get me wrong but repetitive. After that it was going to another Mexican restaurant where I got buzzed from a Margarita, and that felt good. I also bartered for a necklace which to me was a cool experience. It felt nice to change something to be in my favor. Then things took a turn for the worse whenever my aunt lost her phone in a taxi. That became a hunt for my aunts phone. It was Mexico and we didn’t remember our taxi. While people searched my mom and I walked to buy me a t-shirt and postcard. On our way there we saw a girl dancing on a pole in some bar. It was a pleasant site I’m not going to lie, but it was funny watching desperate men walk up and slap dollar bills on the stage. Back to the phone. It seemed hopeless until fifteen minutes before we had to be back on the boat, they found it. Against all odds my aunt found her phone. It was a miracle, okay more like luck. Still it was cool and unexpected. My family on the way back to the boat started randomly dancing because dancing is fun. No matter how silly you look. We finally made our way back to the boat. After waiting in line, and hearing drunk people screaming we were back on the boat. Of course my first action was to change, and go directly to the club (named O2) and see boat squad.
Kenzie, Maddy, Garrett and Chris were all there in Club O2. We met up and hung out the entire day. At the club we were all playing music, when I put on “Firework”, and we all sang it. That song turned to be our theme song. For us to later walk down the halls singing it as loud as we could. That happened a lot, but back I’m getting ahead of myself. Back to Tuesday. We hung out all day until people had to go eat. So we met up at 10pm like the last night, and we saw Kevin, and Serena. We hung out until Chris (who now had a curfew), Maddy, Kenzie, and Garrett had to go to bed. It was then just Vanya, Macy, Serena, Kevin, and I. We went to these chairs and sat and started talking some more. Then some hipster look guy walked nearby, and Vanya recognized him and called him over. His name was Chandler (18), but was nicknamed Nick or William, because he resembled her friends. Sadly again time goes by. Vanya and Macy had to go to bed. It was then just Kevin, Chandler, Serena, and me. The rest of the night was interesting. It was walking, and talking. With Chandler and Kevin hitting on Serena, and I being there. During the walking around the boat, Kevin and Chandler reenacted the famous scene from “The Titanic”. Soon Kevin had to go to bed. It was just Chandler, Serena, and I. Well actually not for long. Kevin sneaked out and rejoined us. That is how Kevin got a curfew the rest of the cruise. Anyways, towards the end of the night, we were all on somewhere close the deck 5. We talked and Chandler asked Serena for her room number so he could send her flowers. After an awkward moment of her not giving him her room number someone got the idea to take a photo like the kids from “The Breakfast Club”. We all put our heads in a circle, laying down, and took a photo. Which resulted in Chandler and Kevin giving Serena their phones and asking her to put her number in them. One of the two said that whoever got her number won. So she turned to me and asked “Triscuit where’s your phone?” I handed it to her, and she put her number in it. That coined the phrase from Serena “Triscuit you won!” Finally Chandler and I had to go to bed. Again we planned to meet at the same place and the same time the next day.
Wednesday: It Was Un-BELIZE-able!
I got to wake up a little later than Tuesday, but still early by my standards. We had to get on a boat to get to the island of Belize. First thing we did on shore was dance to pop music. Yes our family did a lot of random dance parties. That was so much fun. We had no definite plans that day, but we soon got some. We decided to go on a tour, and see some monkeys. We had a long wait until it started though. So I decided to hit the shops to at least get the postcards. Each place I stopped at I had to get a postcard and a t-shirt to show I was at that place. I bought two postcards, one a joke and the other serious, and what would be added to my new “style” a fedora! After that it was still a long time of waiting until we finally got to go on the tour. In this tour we had my mom, dad, brother, my grandparents, and I. My brother and I slept most of the hour long ride to the monkey place until we got to see monkeys. We had to wait though because it started raining. Who would have thought of it raining in a rainforest? After waiting, and having to use the girls restroom because the guys was closed, the rain stopped and we got to see monkeys. We got to feed monkeys, and even more specific a mother monkey with her young around her. It was an amazing experience. Pretty soon we decided to go back to the dock. I bought my t-shirt and then we decided to just look around. My dad bought some sugarcane to let me taste it. It was sweet but trying to actually eat it, not the best thing. Before leaving we did have to get my dad a hat. Once done we had to get in line, to go back on a boat, to take us back to the cruise boat. Lots of boats right? Well in line this guy walks up and offers everyone in my family samples of alcohol. I took the one of a Pina Colada because they are good. It was still cool realizing that they had to drinking limit, or if so not one that was strongly enforced. My mom got three frozen drinks. She had one, made my dad drink one, and I took the final one. Needless to say it was a fun boat ride back. Trust me I never got drunk, a little buzzed, but never flat out drunk. Just had to make that clear. We finally were back on the cruise though. Just like on Tuesday my first thought was to hit up the club.
Going back to the club to see the normals there. Garrett, Kenzie, Maddy, and Chris. Our agenda until 10pm, swimming and hot tubbing! So we put on swimsuits and went to the pool. Which happened to be our meeting spot at 10pm. We swam and had fun until we decided to play truth or dare. The most memorable moments of this truth or dare is when Kenzie was dared to talk to different random strangers. One was an old man admiring the sunset, and some where just random people happening to swim. It was just fun and games, until it was ruined by the rain. We all had to run inside and dry off. Thankfully for me, some guy whose name escapes me let me use his towel. From that point we wondered around until 10pm. During our adventures we would randomly start singing “Firework” by Katy Perry while walking up and down the halls. We did this until I met Vanya, Macy, Chandler, and Kevin at 10pm to bring them back to the club where Kenzie and the rest were. On the way to the club everyone got into an elevator expect Chandler, then everyone went into that elevator. Me thinking it was a funny joke since we were all going to the club, stayed in the same elevator and went to deck 4, where the club was on. Didn’t see them but once while they were going up. So I went to the club and stayed with the rest of the group until Vanya and Macy came back to us. Then liked normal we all hanged out until the late hours of the night. One memorable moment today was getting security called on me. At least I am pretty sure it was on Wednesday. Vanya and Macy had to go to the bathroom, and wanted me to see what the girls bathroom looked like. So they checked, made sure no one was in there, so I walked in, and look in a stall. Seeing nothing special I walked out only being in the bathroom for around ten seconds. With my luck the person walking passed the girls bathroom at the time, was a female crew member who didn’t like the fact that a teenage boy just came out of the ladies room. “What were doing?” I was quickly asked. So being honest like I should I replied with “I walked in, and walked out.” Now that seems harmless. Guys do it all the time on accident, and since it was night and no one was in there, you would think she would just have the “Stupid teenagers” thought and leave it be. Nope! Instead she told me she was calling security. Vanya and Macy came out and asked what happened. I told them, and we looked over to see the girl yelling and pointing across the hall. So I had to go hide for a little bit. Still not sure if security was called or if it was a scaring tactic, but we did see security on that deck the rest of the night. I don’t know but I do know one thing. The girls bathroom is just a guys bathroom with more stalls instead of urinals, and cleaner. I can cross that off my bucket list. Finally we went to bed with the same time and place to meet. As a note I don’t remember every small detail, and I try and post memorable moments, and try to remember what day it was on. So this day was a blur, and I think I covered most bases.
Thursday: “I’m Hiding In Honduras” And Sign Flippers!
The Honduras quote was from the song “Lawyers Guns and Money” by Warren. Anyways this day started out with waking up really early so we can start our excursion. This country was my favorite, the beautiful Roatan, Honduras. This was also the last country we visited. We started with a trip to some reservation nearby. Here I had the most fun. We started with kayaking. That was such an amazing experience. I was partners with my mom, and my brother and dad were partners. It was fun and my mom and I ran into a boat. The idiot operating it decided to steer closer to us, and when we ran into the boat, frightened because if we hit the motor we would not have had such a fun rest of the cruise. This jerk decided to tell us to not touch his boat. Thankfully we got away and nothing bad was done. Then it was time for snorkeling. This proved to be not my thing whenever I quit right before doing it. I got knee high up in the water with the feet flippers on, and decided I did not like swimming looking down. I enjoyed a relaxing 45 minutes by the pool, waiting for my family to get back. Finally they get back and my mom informs me that I would not have liked it, and that my judgement was correct. Then in my favorite part of all of it, the tour of the reservation. We saw a bunch of iguanas, birds, and my favorite, monkeys! I had a monkey jump on my head, a parrot on my shoulder, and I ate starfruit. I was angry at my mom for telling me to leave my phone on the boat, and I couldn’t take pictures, which now I see I overreacted about, but it was still extremely enjoyable. We learned about a pirate who lived there, and then went back to Mahogany Bay, and got my t-shirt and postcard. I tried coffee there, and we walked to the beach. Saw the scenery there, met my grandparents, aunt, uncle, and cousins there. We walked back to the dock and of course started dancing again. My family had a lot of random dance parties, and it was great. Only bad thing about that day was that my uncle hurt his knee, which would later turn out to be more serious than originally thought. We went back to the boat, and I was ready for the club. Yes I spent a lot of time there. One important detail before I go to the boat section of this, my dad bought the famous Cuban Cigar!
It was the best of time, with none of that worst of times junk. Leaving Honduras though did make the fact that pretty soon we would have to get off the boat and go back home more clear. See on this day I met a girl named Annika (16 or 17) and she brought up that we would be having to go home soon. I told her “Yea and I am choosing to ignore that until the last day whenever we all say goodbye to each other forever.” Well first it’s not going to be forever because I’m making sure we all see each other again, but it still was a sad though. Nonetheless we had fun this day. Nothing but the usual hanging out, walking around, talking, finding people who we lost, just the normal. For one time during the day (I have no memory of when) I met up with some people from Club O2 that I didn’t know too well but I knew. One guys name was Aiden (15) and we bonded over being from the same state. Things we did were have a contest to see who could shake the most stranger’s hands, and take a big group photo. We took it even with a stranger because you got to have as much fun as you can! I left them sometime I don’t remember when, but I do remember it was when they wanted to play spin the bottle, but I had to meet people. Life on the boat became a routine, and it became something to look forward to. Whilst hanging out, we would go into the elevators on the boat, and see these signs. They were on Velcro, and so what did Chris and Garrett decide to do? They decided to flip them upside down, thus creating a tradition for the rest of the cruise. Every time we would get into an elevator alone, we would flip the signs upside down. It was our way of leaving a mark on the boat. So at this moment we had our theme song: Firework, our mark: flipping signs, and our meeting spot: the back of the boat. It all became a normal thing that I looked forward to. Finally meeting up at 10pm at the same spot. Except it was just Vanya, Macy, Serena, Kevin and I. Then us talking until Serena and Kevin had to go, and it was just Vanya, Macy, and I. Since there were no need to wake up early the next day, we could stay up all night. The three of us went to the club, and met Garrett. We took more Breakfast Club photos with the four of us, and talked. I “stripped” for them (which I had done before but I don’t remember the exact day. I think Tuesday but once again not sure.) Trust me everyone got to see my show. Like the other nights, not much happened but the usual. Talking and then finally going to bed to meet the next day. Except on Friday we would meet at 2pm so we could see each all day!
Friday: Fancy Friday, And Another Day At Sea.
I woke up earlier than expected this day. I don’t remember every small detail today since a lot happened, and I don’t have a bunch of pictures from the morning to help jog my memory. I do know that we were going to take group photos today, so at 2pm we did just that. Sadly Serena, and Kevin weren’t in them because we couldn’t find them until sometime later that night, where we agreed to meet up at the same spot no matter what to take photos. We all had to go to formal dinner at different times anyways, so until we had to go it was mainly just the normal hanging out. Like it always did it ended up with it being Vanya, Macy, and I until I had to go to the dinner. I dressed up in the best outfit I have ever worn, trust me I even think I looked good in it. Then it was off to take photos with the family and eat dinner, to celebrate my grandparent’s 50th anniversary! My immediate family got lost on the way to the place we were meeting the rest of my family, and after the pictures we danced to a guitarist playing in the lobby. Like I said lots of dancing, and no thoughts given about what others might think. It was fun, and my family enjoyed just dancing with each other and letting loose. That all lasted until it was time to go to the dinner. Dinner was dinner. It was fun, I had steak, and it went just how any dinner would go. We danced with our waiter, and then once the dinner was over we all went back to doing our normal routines. My family did whatever they normally did, and I went to go wait for my friends to get out of their dinner to take fancy photos.
I went to the club, and met the people I mentioned yesterday. chilled until it was time for me to take fancy photos with Serena, Kevin, Vanya, and Macy. We all met at the same time, and took a bunch of professional photos in our outfits. My outfit was a black button up shirt, a black vest, black slacks, black shoes, my fedora which was grey with a red feather, and that all was tied together by a white bow tie. Yep, and that is how I found my style. Fedoras are my new favorite hat, and I think I’ll start wearing them normally now. Back to boat squad. We took the photos, and decided to go change back to our casual attire because even though being fancy is nice, it isn’t so nice when you are around wet floors, and a bunch of other people. Then it was like normal. Us all walking, talking, taking photos, and having fun. Soon Kevin and Serena had to go to bed, and it left Vanya, Macy, and I there. We hanged out until they met some Jake guy, and he was the type of person that I don’t hang out with. Not because we was a race or religion, but because his personality, and mine clash, and I knew what he was about, and I didn’t want to be around that. So I went to bed, to see the boat squad for the final day on the boat.
Saturday: A Puff Of Cuba, And Our Sad Farewells.
Wow, just thinking about this makes me tear up a little. The day where we all had to say goodbye. It was emotional but let me start it from the morning. I was woken up by my dad, so I went on my way to the club after getting showered, dressed, etc. I met my mom there, and we bought photos. Photos of family, and the fancy photos boat squad took, and the group one I mentioned on Thursday. After buying them I went to the club. There I saw that group from the photo we took on Thursday. We decided to go eat, so on the way to deck 10, where all the restaurants were, I ran into Serena. I showed her the photos we bought, and then we went to deck 10 to rejoin the rest of the people. There we ran into Kevin, so the three of us talked until Serena had to go to an art auction. Then it was Kevin and I, when we went to the club. We saw people there and hanged out all day. I was mainly with Kenzie, Maddy, Chris, Garrett, and Kevin, in attempt to not be around that Jake guy. We later met Serena, and we all went to karaoke. Garrett and Serena sang since Kenzie and Maddy couldn’t due to too many people signing up. Garrett sang well, but Serena was the best singer that walked up there. She blew everyone away. That gave me the idea for her nickname. Minigun. She is small, and kills it! With the karaoke being over, we all had to go do stuff except Kevin and I. We went to the club and chilled for a little, until I had to go eat with my family to celebrate my aunt’s birthday. I left that dinner early though, so I could hang out with my friends the most I could. I went to the club though, and saw no one familiar there. So I decided to go get some pudding at the buffet. There I ran into Serena and Elyse, and we talked until they had their dinner. We agreed to meet at 9:30 or if all else fails 10pm at the club. Everything was a blur to me until 9pm. When I went with my dad to smoke a Cuban Cigar. It was the first cigar I’ve ever smoked, and the only one for a while. I shared it with my dad though so I didn’t smoke the entire thing. Plus my dad had to teach me to properly do it, which was funny. The song American Pie was on in the background, and we had people nearby talking about their first time smoking cigars. It was a nice memory. Smoking my first cigar with my dad. Now I must note the only reason I was allowed to smoke it was because it was a Cuban, and who knows the next time I could ever get a chance to smoke one. We did that until I went to the club and met up with everyone for the farewell party. We all got t-shirts, and signed each others. Once the club got too loud, and boring, everyone went to our normal meeting spot. On the way there we took more Breakfast Club photos, and we had our last time hanging out together on the boat. We made a circle out of chairs, and everyone went through everyone, and said what they liked about each. Then we gave speeches, and said goodbye to each person that left, as they left. I’m being completely honest here, I flat our cried whenever we all had to say goodbye. I cried a lot. Time doesn’t stop or slow for anyone though, and so as it was everyone but Vanya, Jake, Macy, and I went to bed. Macy and I decided to go and leave Vanya and Jake, and we hung out until Vanya finally joined us without Jake. Then the three of us stayed up all night, and saw us port into the dock. We hung out until I had to go help my family get everything together. We went to my room, hugged and said goodbye. I thought I was too tired to cry, but I was wrong. After saying goodbye, and them walking down that hall, my grandma which was knocking on the my aunt and uncles door (our neighbors) turned to me, smiled and said “Good morning.” I smiled opened the door to our room, planted my face into a pillow and cried. After that it was just the stress of getting off the boat, and the ride home.
It was a week of living on a boat.
In conclusion, that week was the best week of my life. I didn’t meet new friends, I met new family. I wasn’t trapped on a boat, I was living on a boat. I saw something under the farewell party descriptions about saying goodbye to your new best friends. I laughed at the sight thinking that I couldn’t get too attached to people I just met, and once again I was wrong. These people I met are amazing people, and my new favorite people. Like I said, we are family now. We are planning on meeting up again sometime soon. That week changed my life, made me see life less cynical, and enjoy everything. Made me want to be social, and not like wifi as much. Now I’m home, and I want to do is talk to my new family from the boat. Which I have been doing. Now that I am home, I have the precious memory, and the photos from this week. I also have the impact that Kenzie, Maddy, Garrett, Chris, Serena, Kevin, Vanya, and Macy left on me. I have every experience I lived through on the boat. Most importantly I have a whole new family. A family we call Boat Squad.
